Stanley's Unplanned Legacy
Stanley's Unplanned Legacy
Stanley was a successful Lagos-based entrepreneur in his early 50s. He ran a logistics business, owned a house in Lekki, and had a few savings and investments spread across banks and small properties. He had a 15-year-old son, Fortune, from a previous relationship, and he was now in a new relationship with his girlfriend, Funke.
Despite his family repeatedly urging him to formalize a Will, Stanley always brushed it off:
“I am healthy, and I know who matters. Everything will work itself out.”
No one imagined how quickly things could spiral out of control.
The Unexpected Happened
One evening, Stanley suffered a sudden heart attack and passed away. The shock to his family was immense, but it was only the beginning of a legal and emotional nightmare.
After Stanley’s death, Funke began making decisions around his Lekki house and car, mostly because she had been helping him with day-to-day activities while he was alive. However, she had no legal authority over his assets.
Meanwhile, Fortune, the rightful heir to Stanley’s estate, also had no legal power to step in until an administrator was officially appointed — a process that could take months or even years.
The logistics business Stanley had built over a decade became a point of contention. Funke’s family started insisting that she should continue running Stanley’s business since she had been close to him
No one could access Stanley’s Bank accounts because he had not given anyone the legal authority to do so. As a result, some of his investments also remained unclaimed due to lack of proper documentation.
In just a few weeks, the once-loving family found themselves embroiled in disputes, suspicion, and mounting legal fees. What was supposed to be a time of mourning turned into months of stress and conflict.
The Lesson
Had Stanley executed even a simple Will or created a Living trust with FCMB Trustees, his assets could have been managed immediately according to his wishes. Stanley’s inheritance could have been protected, the business could have continued without dispute, and Funke’s role clarified legally.
A small step while alive — planning with a professional — could have spared the family months of conflict, financial strain, and emotional turmoil.
